Bhanudatta's Rasamanjari revisited

by Parva News Network

The exquisite amphitheatre of Saptaparni in Hyderabad hosted an elegant book release function of Dr Pappu Venugopal Rao’s recent work, a translation, transliteration and commentary on ‘Rasamanjari of Bhanudatta’. Dr Rao, a scholar, an academician, a writer with as many as 20 publications to his credit, a connoisseur, and more aptly a friend of art and artistes, has been bringing out pioneering works in educating the aticstically inclined readers.

Saptaparni, glowed with artistic finesse as this scholar chose to have the first release of his work here. The book being a research based rare treatise covering the Nayaka-Nayaki concept of classical dance found the cultural aficionados of Hyderabad turn up in full attendance. The occasion had big names on the dais and off it too. With Natyacharya Nataraja Ramakrishna presiding over, Shobha Naidu,in quintessential style, released the book. Alekhya Punjala, wearing all the culture over her, accepted the first copy, and Anuradha Jonalagadda, in her simple scholarly self, provided an in depth review of the book. As regards the off stage stalwarts, the event was graced by Sangeetha Rao, Pasumarthy Ramalinga Shastry of the Hyderabad University with his entire student force, Ananda Shankar Jayant's quick visit, and many more young and experienced research minds alike.

While the dignitaries on stage talked of Dr Pappu Venugopal Rao being a messenger in disguise contributing immensely to the arts and reminiscing his valuable support lent to artistes, Anuradha deconstructed the vision and essence behind the publication of this work. She lauded the work as a path breaking effort and donning the role of a path finder for young students of dance. Anuradha reasoned its necessity today to the non-existence of any detailed study concentrating on the Nayaka-Nayaki bhavas and targeted towards the dance community alone. She vouched for its importance specially as an essential English language work marked by apt, subtle, simple and comprehendable commentary. She opined that unlike other works, this book has worked with a style and substance that caters to the use of readers, than that merely shows off the mastery of the subject by the author.

As she went deeper into the aesthetics of the book, providing detailed analysis of the concept and introducing new divisions and nayakis, she made a thought provoking remark of how the Nayaka-Nayaki concept should be read by every human being for it was all about characters, human nature, relationships and situational behavior patterns.

All in all, the event was a breather in terms of some food for thought for artistes, a slice of different activity than the usual shows of performances. For all those lucky book worms attending the function, the book was given at a 30 percent discount.
