Tagore's poetry through dance imagery

Astad Deboo Company performing at Taramati Bardari, Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Attempting to interpret poetry through a dance form is not an easy ordeal. But with Astad Deboo's unique dance style, which weaves together modern and traditional strands unlike any other, one gets a flavor of Tagore's creativity. Presented by Moving Images, Astad Deboo Company's Interpreting Tagore at the Krishnakriti Festival was a sheer visual delight. The Padmashri awardee was performing for the first time in the city in his career spanning over three decades.

The contemporary dancer and choreographer presented a quartet based on Tagore's poetry - Walking Tall, Your Grace, Awakening and Surrender. Set to world music by nine composers the performance was indeed radically different. The elements of alternative theatre forms, puppets and masks added to the visual aura. Another highlight of the presentation was that the dance featured homeless and child laborers supported by New Delhi based Salaam Baalak Trust. The performance was a true testimony of these youngsters' talent and inspiring commitment.
